Ecology
THE RETURN TO LIFE WHEN SEPARATION IS FINALLY SEEN

For the past few weeks we have walked together toward a single remembering.
Life is relational.
Relationship is the way Life creates, sustains and continually becomes.
Separation is not one of Life's patterns.
It has become one of ours.
Together we have explored economy, housing, health, education, employment, time, loneliness, people and place, and finally isolation.
Each has revealed the same truth.
When we forget that Life is relationship, separation slowly becomes the way we organise ourselves.
By now, something has become clear.
The ache we feel is not random.
It is what happens when we organise ourselves apart from the very pattern through which Life has always lived.
Before we continue...
Before we explore how Life moves and creates...
We need to remember what separation caused us to forget.
Not another issue.
Not another solution.
Life itself.
Ecology is the language of relationship
For many people the word ecology immediately brings to mind forests, birds, climate, conservation or carbon. These matter deeply, but they are not ecology.
They are expressions of it.
Ecology has never been about the environment.
It has always been about Life.
Ecology is the living pattern of relationship through which everything becomes. The forest is ecology. A family is ecology. Your body is ecology. Memory is ecology. Culture is ecology. Language is ecology. Love is ecology. Soil is ecology. The stars are ecology.
Everything exists because relationship exists.
Once we begin to see this, ecology is no longer another subject to study. It becomes the way we begin seeing everything.
The separation hidden inside language
One of the most subtle forms of separation has been hidden in the words we use every day.
Language is commonly defined as the primary form of human communication. Nature is commonly defined as the physical world, excluding humans.
Neither definition is malicious.
Yet together they quietly teach us something that Life has never taught.
Humans communicate.
Nature exists.
One belongs here.
The other belongs over there.
But long before human beings formed words, Life was already speaking.
The mycelial networks beneath forests. The roots of trees. Birdsong at dawn. The chemistry of flowers. The movement of water. The tides. The signalling between cells. The migration of whales. The turning of the seasons.
Communication did not begin with humanity.
Human language emerged from Life’s language.
In the same way, humans were never outside nature.
The word may separate us.
Life never did.
There has never been humanity over here...
and nature over there.
There has only ever been One Living System.
We cannot reconnect with what has never left us
We often hear that we need to reconnect with nature. The phrase is well intended, but perhaps it quietly carries the very assumption we are trying to leave behind.
Reconnect implies that the relationship disappeared.
It did not.
Life never stopped relating to us.
The soil continued breathing. Trees continued exchanging nutrients. Rivers continued flowing. The seasons continued turning. Our own bodies continued participating in the same living processes that have always sustained existence.
The relationship never ended.
Only our awareness of it.
The greatest separation was never ecological.
It was perceptual.
We forgot what we already belonged to.
One Living System is not asking us to build a relationship with Life.
It is inviting us to remember the relationship that has never ceased.
Sacred Self
Perhaps this is what it means to remember ourselves.
Not simply as individuals. Not as isolated identities.
But as living expressions of the same Life moving through everything else.
The self is not sacred because someone declares it so.
The self is sacred because nothing exists outside Life.
Because existence itself is participation.
Because every being carries the whole while expressing it uniquely.
The sacred is not something we add.
It is something we remember.
The moment we stop seeing ourselves as separate from Life, something extraordinary happens.
Ecology is no longer something we protect.
It becomes something we remember we are.
One Living System
This is why One Living System begins where it does.
Not with solutions.
Not with programmes.
Not with fixing the world.
It begins by learning to see.
To observe what Life is already doing before we decide what we should do.
Life has been creating long before us. Life has been relating long before us. Life has been communicating long before us. Everything around us is already revealing the patterns through which Life continually becomes.
The invitation is beautifully simple.
Can you see me?
Can you feel me?
Can you recognise yourself within me?
Because you are not standing outside the Living System, looking in.
You are one unique expression of the same Life continually expressing itself through astonishing diversity.
There has never been another story.
Relationship asks something of us
Remembering does not make Life effortless.
It draws us more deeply into relationship.
And every relationship asks something of us.
Difference creates movement. Growth creates resistance. Love creates vulnerability. Communities create friction. Even birth begins with pressure.
We entered this world through tension.
Why would we imagine that becoming ends there?
Life has never avoided tension.
Life grows through it.
Tension is one of the ways Life becomes.
And it is where we will stand next.
Here is a place to stand.
Not seeing ecology as something outside humanity. Seeing Life as the whole within which everything belongs.
Not imagining nature as something separate from us that we must reach across to protect.
Remembering there has never been a self apart from Life.
Not standing above creation. Standing within it.
Not forgetting what has always been true.
Remembering that every breath, every body, every river, every forest, every community and every star belongs within One Living System.
Because ecology has never been about the environment.
It has always been about Life.

Thank you, Cari. I was struck by your reflection on language. In many ways it echoes what I explored yesterday: the words we repeatedly use shape the reality we experience. Sometimes the deepest separation begins there. A very thoughtful piece.

Beautifully written Cari Thank you!
