Tension
The Way Life Becomes

Every one of us entered this world in the same way.
Not through ease or comfort, but through pressure, movement and tension.
Before we spoke a word, held a belief or learned to avoid discomfort, Life brought us into form through resistance. Birth is one of the first ways Life reveals how becoming happens.
Perhaps that should make us pause.
Somewhere along the way, we learned to believe that tension means something is wrong.
Life has never taught that.
We have.
Tension is one of Life’s ways of becoming
Look closely and it becomes impossible to miss.
A seed does not emerge without breaking open. Roots do not reach water without pushing through soil and stone. Muscles strengthen because they meet resistance. Rivers carve valleys because they continue meeting rock. Trees grow stronger because they lean into the wind. Even stars are born through immense pressure.
Nothing living becomes without tension.
Only separated thinking imagines that peace means its absence.
Life understands something different.
Tension is movement.
Tension is growth.
Tension is becoming.
Relationship creates tension
Earlier we remembered that Ecology is not the environment.
It is Life itself.
And if Life is relationship, then tension is inevitable.
Every relationship asks something of us. Difference creates movement. Growth creates resistance. Love creates vulnerability. Community creates friction.
This is not the failure of relationship.
It is one of its conditions.
Perhaps we have mistaken one of Life’s greatest teachers for one of its greatest enemies.
Building community
One of the many misunderstandings of community is the belief that it requires people to think alike.
It never has.
Building community is not about like minds.
It is about like intention.
We will never understand the world in exactly the same way. Nor should we. Every person arrives carrying different stories, wounds, gifts, experiences and ways of seeing.
When we hear the same news, enter the same conversation or face the same decision, we will experience it through the lives we have already lived.
We are not going to be like-minded in all things.
But we can be intentioned toward the same desire.
If we all saw the world identically, the Living System would lose one of its greatest strengths. Diversity. Diversity is not the enemy of community, despite what many think. It is one of the reasons community exists.
The question has never been whether tension will appear.
The question is whether we know how to live inside it.
Learning to climb
When we climb with a rope, we do not fear its tension. We depend upon it.
Without tension, the rope cannot hold. Without opposing force, there is no ascent. Without torsion, there is no climb.
The very thing that appears to resist movement is the thing making movement possible.
Relationships are the same.
Communities are the same.
Life itself is the same.
The force we keep trying to escape is the force asking us to learn how to climb.
The work inside tension
The true test of community is not whether we always agree.
It is what we do when we do not.
It is learning how to hold ourselves without turning the matter before us into a judgement of our worth. Nor seeing it as personal. It is recognising that disagreement is not necessarily rejection, and that another person’s perspective is not automatically an attack.
It is learning to listen to how each person understands the thing at hand.
To not degrade or belittle.
To explain.
To listen.
To remain curious.
To learn from one another.
Another person’s understanding has been shaped by experiences we may never have lived. If we can stay present long enough to hear that, tension begins to reveal more than opposition.
It reveals relationship asking to deepen.
The Living System does not ask us to erase difference. It asks us to recognise it as diversity.
It asks us to learn and grow through it.
One Living System
Life does not create through sameness.
It creates through diversity held in relationship.
Every ecosystem depends upon difference. Every forest, river, family, community and conversation carries distinct lives meeting, responding and affecting one another.
Tension appears because relationship is alive.
The question has never been how to eliminate it.
The question is how to move with it without abandoning one another.
Creation does not wait for perfect agreement. Life continues becoming through the forces held between us.
When tension moves beyond us
This is not only true in our closest relationships. It is true wherever Life is trying to move.
In families.
In communities.
In public life.
In the systems we inherit and the futures we are trying to create.
When tension rises, we often want to name it quickly. We want to know what side it belongs to, what category explains it, what word can contain it.
But tension asks us to stay longer than that.
To look beneath the first name.
To listen beneath the first argument.
To ask what Life is revealing before we decide what the tension means.
Because once a word - a label - arrives too quickly, it can stop us from seeing.
And when we stop seeing, we stop learning from the very tension that came to help us become.
Here is a place to stand.
Not fearing tension. Learning from it.
Not demanding agreement. Growing through shared intention.
Not avoiding difference. Honouring the Life it carries.
Not abandoning relationship when friction appears. Learning how to remain.
Not mistaking harmony for the absence of tension. Trusting the living movement that can hold them both.
Because tension was never the obstacle.
It has always been one of Life’s invitations to become.
But to receive that invitation, we must be willing to see what tension is revealing before we rush to contain it.

I love this one Cari ♥️
